Guided Reading support

Guided reading is an important part of our day at school. We have a guided reading session every day to practise our sounding out, blending and segmenting skills. It’s one of our favourite parts of the day. We engage in a variety of activities including word puzzles, sorting games, word bingo, tricky word dominoes, matching words to pictures, games on the iPad and computers and much more.

Remember that reading with your child is incredibly important and supports their progress in reading and writing. Reading books aloud stimulates their imagination an expands their understanding of the world. It helps them develop language and listening skills and supports them to understand the written word.

Below is a link to a learning website that your child may enjoy at home. It is one that we use often in the classroom so they should be familiar with it.

http://www.starfall.com/ – a huge variety of games and stories to read to practise blending. Our favourite is tab 2, Learn to Read. There are some great stories with lovely animations (just click on the pictures to watch the story come to life).

Here are a list of our favourite stories. Click on the links to read a brief description of the books and some reviews.

Never Use a Knife and Fork – Neil Goddard and Nick Sharratt

In My Heart. A Book of Feelings – Jo Witek

Peace a last – Jill Murphy

Whatever Next! – Jill Murphy

The Mitten – Jan Brett

Monkey Puzzle – Julia Donaldson

The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes – Mark Pett and Gary Rubinstein

The Dot – Peter H Reynolds

Have You Filled a Bucket Today? A Guide to Daily Happiness for Kids  This is one of our favourite books. It’s a book all about kindness and filling each other’s buckets. Ask your child to tell you how they’ve filled a bucket today. It also links to one of our displays in the classroom. Keep your eye out for it.

HAPPY READING!
