Our Week 16.09.22

Over the past week we have been looking at the book ‘The Story Machine’ by Tom McLaughlin. We have really enjoyed exploring the book.

If you would like to listen and share the story at home, you can listen to the author, Tom, read it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXVqCCeCPAU (adults, please check the video first as there may be external comments or enabled links to other videos/ adverts etc.).

In maths we have been partitioning and exploring different ways we can make a two digit number using different resources such as dienes (base 10 blocks made up of tens and ones) to physically form these numbers and partition them to form equations. For example, we explored how the number 64 has 6 tens and 4 ones but we could also partition this number into 4 tens, 2 tens and 4 ones. You could use this website to make your own number using tens and ones: https://www.coolmath4kids.com/manipulatives/base-ten-blocks

We’ve also thought of different ways to show numbers, including the part part whole model and place value chart.

Part part whole model.
Place value chart.

Parents and carers, we’re looking forward to welcoming you into school for our Meet and Greet session on Tuesday 27th September at 2:30. Please see the newsletter or email from Mrs Smith for full details.

Welcome!

A warm welcome to Year 2! We hope you’ve had an enjoyable, restful and happy summer break. We’re very excited to be welcoming the children into their new Year 2 classes.

In our first week, we were thinking about bubbles! We described them, wrote poems about them and imagined we had a magic bubble that could take us anywhere we wished! We watched this video to give us some ideas and talked about how the different characters might be feeling too: https://www.literacyshed.com/bubbles.html

We’ve been enjoying some sketching and using watercolours in art too!

Our final week in Year 2

A huge thank you from all of us in Year 2 for your kind messages this week.

It has been a pleasure to have taught Skipper 2 this past year. I can’t believe the academic year has come to an end.

Our sports day photos are up on the website: http://www.damers.dorset.sch.uk/news/galleries/

We’ve finished our writing about the Great Fire of London today. We have learnt lots of facts about what happened. We have been learning lots of facts about 2D and 3D shapes too in maths. Have a wonderful summer break – I’ve no doubt the children are ready for their time in Year 3!

Thank you and best wishes

Mr Misun

Our Village Show

Thank you for all your support in helping get our first Village Show since 2019 started again! The children were great and we really enjoyed viewing their work. The children will be bringing home their rosettes or certificates today.

Apple Spiced Muffins

The muffins were a big success! Many of the children enjoyed them. Here is the recipe we followed. The ingredients below make approximately 6 muffins. (The method mentions salt – we did not use any).

Our Week 01.07.22

Somehow it’s July already!

We had a great week! Miss Barnes will be uploading some sports day photos on the school website soon.

Here are some photos from our school trip to Thorncombe Woods and Hardy’s Cottage. The children were great and really enjoyed being out in the woods and exploring Hardy’s gardens and home.

Our week 24.06.22

We’re looking forward to our Sports Day next Monday (27th June!). An email has been sent to Year 2 parents with other details.

In maths this week, we have been learning about money using notes and coins. Some children have enjoyed this activity: https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/coinCalculator/index.html

At home, you could practise making totals of coins (how many ways can you show 50p), buying and selling objects at a pretend shop etc.

In literacy we have been thinking about character descriptions. We have looked at Roald Dahl’s ‘Miss Trunchbull’ and used descriptive language to create our own mean characters.

Healthy week

We had a great time in healthy week. We learnt martial art skills, played cricket (before rain called it off!) and enjoyed eating different foods from avocados, peppers, hummus to making our own muffin pizzas! We were especially proud of how they turned out!
